Stop Feeling Bad About Building A Lifestyle Business
We need to talk about the “millionaire propaganda” and the whole “build in public” culture that has taken over the internet.
To be fair, this messaging has probably always been around, and I just started seeing it everywhere once I launched my own business as a Google Ads specialist.
You know the stuff I’m talking about that we see online.
It’s the constant stream of content telling you that if you aren't scaling to eight figures, hiring a massive team, and "crushing it" 24/7, you’re somehow failing.
For a long time, I let that get into my head. I felt like I wasn't being ambitious enough. I thought I needed another course, a best PPC agency retainer, or a $10k business coach.
I felt like I was "settling" because I didn't want to spend my life chained to a desk doing endless campaign management and optimizing spreadsheets for a global empire.
Today, I’ve finally embraced it: Building a lifestyle business to fund a life you actually enjoy isn't a fallback plan. It’s the win and it's the exact situation that works for me as an independent PPC expert for small business brands.
The Freedom to be Human
For me, the goal isn’t to have the biggest bank account; it’s to have the biggest life.
I want to make dinner with my family, not eat over my keyboard.
I want to go for a walk when the sun is out, not when my calendar grants me a 15‑minute “bio break.”
want to pay for my daughter’s dance lessons — and the travel that comes with her passion — without feeling like I have to sacrifice my sanity to do it and be working the entire time I am gone.
That’s why I operate more as a ppc freelancer rather than building a massive ppc agency.
A lifestyle business is designed to serve you, not consume you.
It’s about building a marketing strategy that lets you go on a content binge, schedule everything out, and then go live your actual life while your marketing automation keeps working in the background.
It’s freedom with structure. It’s ambition without self‑destruction.
If you want to see how this same philosophy shapes the way I approach Google Ads, my blog on modern PPC strategy breaks down how my blogging mindset translates directly into ppc strategy.
Why Doing Less Makes Me a Better PPC Consultant
Here’s the part people don’t expect when it comes to working with an independent ppc expert: this boundary-setting actually makes me a better digital marketing specialist for your brand, rooted in the same values I share on my about page as a Google Ads coach.
Why?
Because I don’t take on clients I can’t fully show up for.
I’m not chasing volume, and I am not busy managing massive corporate accounts for digital marketing companies. My goal is to empower you to build your own sustainable digital marketing engine, not to make you permanently dependent on a massive monthly retainer, which is exactly how my Google Ads consulting and coaching services are structured.
I’m not trying to scale myself into burnout.
I’m intentional. When you hire a PPC professional who limits their client roster, you get true diagnostic depth. If I say yes to your business, it’s because I know I can give your paid search portfolio the time, attention, and technical care it deserves.
Because I keep my client list tight, I have the actual bandwidth to roll up my sleeves and execute the technical work that modern ppc advertising requires, and when needed I offer a focused PPC consultation to stop wasted ad spend.
I'm not just glancing at high-level charts; I am in the trenches doing the heavy lifting:
Granular Account Setup: Building a clean campaign structure with tightly themed ad groups and tailored ad formats.
Deep-Dive Research: I personally conduct keyword research to target high-intent terms, avoiding the bloated, wasteful keywords that spike your customer acquisition cost.
Testing & Copywriting: Running continuous creative testing and writing compelling ad copy that speaks directly to your ideal buyer.
Technical Optimization: Fine-tuning bidding strategies, setting up advanced bidding strategies like Maximize Conversions with proper guardrails or Maximize Conversion Value for smarter pacing, and diving into Google Analytics to unearth conversion improvements.
Post-Click Experience: Reviewing landing pages and implementing landing page optimization to ensure the traffic you buy actually turns into qualified leads, which pairs beautifully with value-based bidding in Google Ads so you stop paying for junk inquiries.
You’re not getting a frazzled, overextended account manager who is managing campaigns across 10 other clients while juggling internal team collaboration meetings.
You’re getting an experienced ppc consultant who protects her energy so she can protect your ad budgets.
If you want to read more about maximizing your ad spend, I have an entire hub page dedicated to budgeting for ppc campaigns.
The Trade-Off: Time vs. Money
As a paid campaigns veteran, I’ll be the first to tell you: ppc efforts aren't for everyone.
Traffic is the most expensive commodity in the world.
You have two ways to pay for it: Money or Time, and the math of whether in-house or agency PPC actually saves money is more complex than it looks.
If you aren’t pouring thousands into a monthly ad spend every month, you have to invest your resources elsewhere.
You need eyes on your business.
For me, that shift has been moving away from the "pay-to-play" treadmill of running continuous ppc ads and into the world of organic SEO and AIO (AI Optimization).
AKA exactly how you landed on this blog.
Marketing in the Age of AIO
In the AI-driven world we’re living in right now, the digital marketing strategies game has changed.
Smart Google Ads optimization now often means doing less, as I talk about in my guide to counterintuitive truths about Google Ads optimization, and choosing bidding tactics carefully, like knowing when Target Impression Share vs. Maximize Conversions makes sense.
By focusing on organic reach and optimizing for how AI models find and surface information on search engines, I’ve created a sustainable ecosystem that works for me 24/7.
The Binge: I can spend a few days intensely creating, leaning into my flow state.
The Schedule: I front-load the work so the "digital me" is out there doing the heavy lifting.
The Result: My content is working in one time zone while I’m enjoying a slow morning in another.
It Is More Than Okay
If you’ve been feeling guilty for not wanting to run multi platform campaigns across Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, LinkedIn Ads, and social media advertising just to build a "unicorn" company, this is your permission slip.
It is absolutely doable to create a business that makes you happy, keeps you comfortable, and most importantly, leaves you with the energy to actually live your life fully and slowly.
We don't all have to be millionaires. We just have to be free.
Different businesses have different business needs. Some businesses want to buy traffic instantly via video ads or retargeting campaigns for immediate lead generation. Some want to buy ad traffic temporarily while they build their organic SEO. Others just want to run a few multiple campaigns to see if paid media works for them without committing to a high minimum ad spend demanded by traditional ppc companies.
Again, all these reasons are valid.
They are exactly why I built my Protective PPC™ model. I want to help you build successful ppc campaigns that respect your boundaries.
Personal Note: This post is as much for me as it is for you. I’m choosing the beach over the boardroom, and I’m choosing AIO over the endless, exhausting loop of chasing traffic. And honestly? I’ve never felt a more ambitious track record of growth.
